Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
