Heartbreak and Laughter

The project came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes track breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience called for a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But the band will always be their top priority.

"We have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
